David Fischer After Thurofreminga, I did not expect that Asarhaddon's stories could get any more sad - enter Besenken. Nimmermehr is another masterful piece of atmospheric, woeful black metal with Anna Nihil's emotionally crippling vocals again being a massive contributor to a soul-crushing story. What always stands out about Asarhaddon is the guitar tone, and once again this is true. Für immer is comprised of only wind chimes and field recordings, and I never thought that this could be so beautiful. Amazing. Favorite track: Nimmermehr.

“Besenken “tells the tragic story of an old lighthouse keeper who has lost his wife and sons to the unforgiving ghosts of the open sea. Days have grown darkest, and the coast mourns to the keeper’s dire calls and desperate weeping. Trapped in infinite solitude and haunted by thousands of grueling memories, the keeper sets out into a heavy rainstorm, seeking reunion with his dear family. Losing grip on the wet rocks, the keeper falls into the black waters and is dragged under by the howling spectres, granting him death to embrace his loved ones eternally.

The record’s B-side takes you to one of the rooms in the empty lighthouse on the morning after the keeper’s passing. Listening in on the crashing waves, creaking trees, rustling leaves and thunder drawing nearer, you can sense your thoughts fading quiet. Every sound was captured meticulously over months, weathering wind and rain out in nature. Proud to deepen the connection to all listeners, the collective invites you to close your eyes and levitate through another heartfelt narrative.

Trivia

The record’s cover is adorned with the skull of a great black-backed gull, that was found 20 years ago on the Swedish island Øland, illustrating the nautical theme of the story. The photograph was taken on a warm Summer’s evening in the cradle of the Klus Bridge (15th century), located in East-Germany.
